The 5 Powers - Best Picture, People's Film Festival 2016 - One Night Only September 15th
"He was like a tall oak to us". One of the deepest friendships Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh has held dear, is the relationship that he and Sister Chan Khong had with American war pacifist Alfred Hassler during the late 1960's -70's. It was Hassler, as Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, who not only came to Vietnam during the American war to meet with the Buddhist resistance , but who later brought Thich Nhat Hanh to the United States to share what was happening to the people of Vietnam. Hassler also introduced Thich Nhat Hanh to Martin Luther King, Jr., who subsequently spoke against the war as a result of those meetings.
The 5 Powers is a unique mixture of vintage documentary footage, historic montage, and vivid animation which tells the story of these three super heroes of non-violent action for peace. The film is an animation of a graphic novel originally titled, Walking with Alfred Hassler , which begins with Hassler's last days at a hospital in Suffern, New York, and tells the remarkable story of this trio of friends and agents of peace as told through the eyes of those gathered around his bedside. FILM TRAILER.
Gregory Kennedy, the co-director, and co-producer of The 5 Powers film conceived the idea for the film and original comic book - which itself was renamed The Secret of the 5 Powers before becoming a film - and will be present for a Q & A session at the conclusion of the film. He will be joined by Dr. Anthony Nicotera, Board Member of the Fellowship of Reconciliations and Adjunct Faculty at NYU's Silver School of Social Work. Together they will introduce the film and also host a panel discussion afterwards to share the backstory of how the whole project came together, and what continued afterwards. There is so much more to say about these two leaders and how they embody The 5 Powers in their own lives. Please view their Biographies here.
Ordained members of Thich Nhat Hanh's Order of Interbeing and of Laughing Rivers Sangha will also be available to answer questions about Thich Nhat Hanh and the teachings.
