The 5 Powers - Best Picture, People's Film Festival 2016 - Church of the Redeemer May 23rd

A stimulating, free and fun evening, offering an introduction to the Plum Village Tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, plus his local community which meets weekly at Church of the Redeemer. This 2-hour evening will also offer a powerful film, followed by discussion and the offer of a Mindfulness meditation practice.
The 5 Powers is a unique mixture of vintage documentary footage, historic montage, and vivid animation which tells the story of these three super heroes of non-violent action for peace. The film is an animation of a graphic novel originally titled, Walking with Alfred Hassler , which begins with Hassler's last days at a hospital in Suffern, New York, and tells the remarkable story of this trio of friends and agents of peace as told through the eyes of those gathered around his bedside. FILM TRAILER.
"He was like a tall oak to us". One of the deepest friendships Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh has held dear, is the relationship that he and Sister Chan Khong had with American war pacifist Alfred Hassler during the late 1960's -70's. It was Hassler, as Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, who not only came to Vietnam during the American war to meet with the Buddhist resistance , but who later brought Thich Nhat Hanh to the United States to share what was happening to the people of Vietnam. Hassler also introduced Thich Nhat Hanh to Martin Luther King, Jr., who subsequently spoke against the war as a result of those meetings.
Ordained members of Thich Nhat Hanh's Order of Interbeing and of Laughing Rivers Sangha will also be available to answer questions about Thich Nhat Hanh and the teachings. They will also lead attendees in a 15-minute session of mindfulness meditation.
May 23rd 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Church of the Redeemer in Squirrel Hill!! Don't miss this beautiful, 1 hour-long film, and please stay for the panel discussion and meditation practice afterwards.
